Introduction to the Shire
About the Society
The
Society for Creative Anachronism is an international living history organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the
arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. Our
Known World consists of 19 Kingdoms, with over thirty thousand
members residing in countries around the world. Members, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events which feature tournaments, royal courts,
feasts, dancing, classes, workshops, and more. Events can range from a few people getting together for a couple of hours to practice a craft or skill, to thousands
of people gathered together for two weeks to wage a multi-kingdom war, meet others from hundreds of miles away, and share knowledge and skills.
Membership is not required to attend any event, however
for large public events you must wear an attempt at medieval attire.
About the Shire of Owl's Nest
The Shire of Owl's Nest started out as a group of people at Kennesaw State University who were interested in the Middle Ages. The founding members joined the
Barony of South Downs (the Metro Atlanta Group) and formed a "College," a subgroup attached to an educational institution.
The group then expanded into a "Canton," which included people not affiliated with the University. "Shire" status was granted by the Barony soon after.
Twenty years later we have grown to a bustling Shire with Business Meetings and Classes in Marietta, and Fighter Practice and Arts & Sciences Social in Kennesaw. Our group is
currently made up of about sixty members, including families with children, college students, professionals, and retirees.
